Unbowed A Memoir by Wangari Maathai - Free Essay Example

Unbowed is a compelling and inspiring memoir of the first environmentalist African woman to have earned the honor of being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. Wangari Maathai takes the reader through from her childhood until she becomes a professor. Through her scientific abilities, she identifies environmental degradation and sets on a movement to bring solutions to the problems. The Environmental Maathai recognizes the problems of corruption, mismanagement of the environment through deforestation, and oppression. She becomes aware that advocating for a democracy alone would not bring a solution to the deforestation problems. In the due process, she fears for her own life and that of the family (Maathai 67). Maathai establishes the Green Belt Movement to counter the environmental problem on her land. She sensitized on the issue of government officials owning public lands. She also emphasizes on the protection of biodiversity based on the numerous benefits that biodiversity has on the environment. Biodiversity, for instance, helps to establish a balance in the population as prey animals feed on others. Maathai also participated in the National Council of Woman to motivate women to produce seedlings in a move to protect the forests. This was primarily done to renew the Kenya and the earth as a whole. She appreciated the role of trees that will help make a difference in the world as a whole which is the reason she earned a peace prize. The author identifies the relationship between the government regime and the environmental degradation. She argues that poor policies are subject to deforestation and other malpractices affecting the environment. The result heavily relies on the innocent citizens. Trees provide the solution for some issues. First, they help the women in the society prepare nutritious dishes. Also, they offer wood for fencing. Trees also assist in binding the soil as well as protection of the watersheds. Most prominent is the fact that trees would help to attract the birds which contribute to enriching biodiversity (Maathai 68). Perhaps the reason that Maathai emphasized on rehabilitating the environment owes to the fact that trees help to establish an environment that nurtures all life. In this book, Maathai identifies many issues with the environment. She explains that deforestation is the main problem affecting the environment as a whole. As a result, the effects are felt in the whole biological system. For instance, cutting of trees destroys homes for animals which results in driving them out. The result is that some species are missing and continue being at risk if deforestation is not sensitized. But even though, there are other critical components of the government policies. They have equally contributed to the degradation of the environment using the concept of land privatization. Conclusion Unbowed: A Memoir is quite an informative book addressing an important issue of environmental degradation. Maathai explains the problems with land policies and practices which creates a ground for more controversy and speculation. Her argument is based on democracy and how it would help improve the environment. However, she cannot find the answers to more complex issues on the general biological systems especially since it has effects on peoples livelihood. Although she sensitizes on the conservation of trees, she has to explain a lot more than democracy for efficiency in conserving the environment. Works cited MAATHAI, ALSO BY WANGARI. More to that, alcoholics tend to face legal matters constantly due to violating laws like driving under influence, fights with fellow citizens, vandalism amongst many others. They also tend to have relationship wrangles with spouses, family, children, friends and colleagues (Inder et al., 2012). The Local Government area Parramatta is a suburb which is about 20 km away from Sydney and according to the census of 2011, there were 19,745 people in the area having majority of males (52%) over females (48%). The average age of people of Parramatta is 30 years and within this 65.3% people are over the age of 15 (Parramatta localstats, 2018). These people are fulltime employees and works as labor force in organizations. However, it should be mentioned that the rate of unemployment in Parramatta is 9% and more than 60% homes in the LGA are rented. Therefore, from this demographical characteristics, it can be clearly observed that the rate of less educated or illiterate people are higher in this LGA as that made them work as laborer in organizations. Further, there are other factors in this LGA that increases the stress level of people living in this area such as rented house, less availability to proper professional scope, educational barriers and social discrimination that force pe ople to choose drug or alcoholic addition to overcome these concerns (Parramatta localstats, 2018). Further, while describing the role of these social concerns in increasing the rate of alcoholism in the younger generation is higher than any other issues. Social system affects social inclusion and increases depression and other psychological problems. Many researchers identified psychological disorder as the prime reason for alcoholism in younger generation. According to Tam, Zwar Markham (2013), alcohol affects the central nervous system and provides a sense of calm and happiness. However daily consumption of it increases the agitation level and leads to palpitation. Further researchers also thinks that alcoholism traits can be genetic and behavior also plays an important role to manifest it within the personality of the person (Inder et al., 2012). The data below represents statistical data collected by the Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Health Districts (LHDs) in Parramatta, Australia. Alcohol Abuse in: Daily Drinkers Occasional Drinkers Adults 7.5% of over 16 years 18% of over 16 years 14.8% for over 65 years 25.9 % for over 65 years School Students 58.8% between 12-17 years in Western Sydney and Nepan Blue mountains 10.4% between 12-17 years 23.3 % for NSW 14.0% for NSW Alcohol affects not only the physical, but also emotional and psychological state of a person. Parramatta has recorded that pregnant women who engage in drinking alcohol results to the children contracting fetal alcohol syndrome.it also results to other physical syndromes that led to mental health problems like alcohol psychosis, alcohol dependence syndrome and alcohol related dementia (Srensen et al., 2012). There are many cases that have been reported in hospitals and other private agencies. Records from the national survey of metal health show that 6.5% Australians suffer from 6.5% in a year and 9.4% males and 3.7% female. Long term heavy drinking can lead to depression and anxiety. Schizophrenia has been largely linked to alcoholism in past studies. The studies have shown person with schizophrenia to being aggressive once under influence of alcohol (Hernandez, Leontini Harley, 2013). Alcohol also increases the effect of sedatives such as antidepressants like amitriptyline which impairs metal skills and can cause drivers to cause accidents. Similarly, thiamin deficiency found in most drinkers can lead to Wernicke Korsakov syndrome which can cause brain hemorrhages. Other conditions related to thiamine deficiency include Korsakov alcoholic psychosis and alcoholic cardiomyopathy (Edenberg Foroud, 2013). The ABS recorded over 40% sexual violence to women by men under alcohol influence in the past 20 years above the age of 15 years. The youth have also been recorded to cause over 6% of social destruction mostly in pubs and clubs. The age group most prevalent in crimes is between 14 and 24 years. More to hat, according to the National Drug National Household Survey (NDNHS), there were over 49% reports by people living in a community with alcoholics (Inder et al., 2012). Families with alcoholics have been known to report cases of violence and conflicts with a 16% record of child abuse. Physical abuse to the women in the house has been reported at 43.8% with most of the abuse happening in clubs (47.3%) and (20%) being the resultative fear for those at home (Hernandez, Leontini Harley, 2013). From the data alone, its clear that a high percentage of young underage persons are abusing alcohol both daily and occasionally. More to that, there number of people over drinking during occasions for the adults is quite high especially for the elderly. According to Parramatta LGAs and LHDs, 23.9 deaths and 13640 hospitalization cases reported in hospitals and to the local government are due to alcohol influence or effects. In west Sydney alone, there were 680.4 deaths per 100,000 population attributed to alcohol between 2014-2015 compared to 67106 for NSW. In 2015, KFC applied for a liquor license after it opened a store on Church Street in Parramatta in a bid to join the countless fast food chains like Mad Mex. Guzman y Gomez, Grilld and Nandos who were selling fast-food and alcohol as a form of beverage. The health advocate however sought to have the licenses cancelled on basis of whether the local or broader communitys wellbeing would be affected. Though many people were against it as KFC was regarded to as a family fast food joint. Associating the brand with alcohol would influence the kids to the harmful drink as Professor Daube alluded. He said that most of the local advertisements have brainwashed the kids to pressure to drink alcohol and if a big brand like KFC ran adverts on alcoholic drinks, the kids would surely follow up to buy it (ABC News, 2015). While discussing the role of nursing professionals in managing the alcoholism related health issue in Parramatta, there are several intervention that the healthcare professionals can implement. These interventions are of primary, secondary or tertiary intervention that helps to determine the effectiveness of the health promotional campaign (Taggart et al., 2012). They should primarily organize health promotion camp so that providing assistance to patients suffering from alcohol use disorder and taking care of elderly people who have high prevalence for alcohol becomes easier. Further through this they help recovering alcoholics to get back into the normal routines and live better lifestyles than drinking through analysis if the life they had with the life they would desire to have. To alcohol positive patients they can administer medication like chlormethiazole to deal with withdrawal and multivitamins to improve the bodys immunity (Chan perry, 2012). Further on secondary interventi on they will be studying the alcohol cases reported in the hospital and will recommend policies changes to the health institute and government agencies as well(Taggart et al., 2012). Using guidelines from the EPHPP (Effective public Health Practice Project) as quality assessments tools and guidelines from National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), they are able to recommend the best intervention methods for people using alcohol. On the tertiary basis, they will raise awareness on social and legal implications of excessive alcohol consumption to both individuals and other people in the community as well to show the avenues for effecting changes that show negative implications on health and well-being of individuals (Chan Perry, 2012). While concluding, it can be said that alcoholism is greatly rooted in Parramatta city in Australia and to remove this addiction from the personality of the young generation of Parramatta, harsh and effective steps need to be taken. Though the state of over use of alcohol is quite alarming and disturbing its comforting that the local government in partnership with other institutions from health to private organizations, have taken great strides to reduce and also manage alcohol use among the residents of Parramatta. This is a step creates awareness of alcoholism in the state, the heavily affected northern territory and the rest of Australia as well. Alcoholism is a condition that can be overcome. Roger And Me Essays - English-language Films, Anti-capitalism

Roger And Me Roger and Me The film was one that utilized and demonstrated many techniques found in the genre of documentary. Michael Moore took every aspect of making a film and flawlessly executed it. The resulting product was one that was to the point and interesting. The first thing that I realized was Moores ability to use B role and integrate it seamlessly into the film. One example would be when he was moving home from San Diego. The story cut to a scene in a movie that was of a man coming home from the army. I remember thinking that even though this film had nothing to do with the story at hand, it was very clear as to what happened. He saved a few mins of film and got straight to the point. Various other film clips were used to tell the story. This brings me to the second point, which is Moores ability to hold the audiences attention. You have a film about the town of Flint, Michigan and the trouble it went through during the GM plant closings. Right now I can think of a few thousand ways a filmmaker could have taken this story, added his point of view, and bored me out of my mind. That couldnt be any farther from the truth. I found myself drawn into the story that Michael presented. He used comedy to pick up some slower parts and good camera angles to keep my attention on the screen. As for Story and Characters Moore once again used text book accuracy and added his twist. He picked a few characters and used them through out the film. This is something that kept the audience from getting confused. I think a lot of filmmakers screw up by introducing too many characters. For example, the sheriff deputy was a main character the makes you realize the truth behind what was going on. The Deputy represented the problems and pain that GM was causing by closing the plants. Moore took all aspects of the story and assigned characters to represent each side of the whole situation. The story was well thought out and organized in definite sections or acts. You can tell that Moore spent did his time in pre production. This documentary was well thought out and executed. Michael Moore has a definite style of his own. This used together with good fundamentals proved to me that you could make almost any story interesting if you do it correctly. Film and Cinema

NMSQT Why Should You Care

What Is the PSAT/NMSQT Why Should You Care SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Have you heard about the PSAT or the National Merit program and are wondering what they are?Are you looking for ways to prepare for the SAT? Read this guide to learn what the PSAT/NMSQT is, what it tests, and how it can get you ready for the SAT and earn you money for college. What Is the PSAT/NMSQT? First of all, what do all those letters stand for? The full name is thePreliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, often abbreviated to PSAT. So what is the PSAT? It's a standardized test that 10th and 11th graders can take, and about 3.5 million students choose to take it each year. The PSAT is used to determineeligibility and qualification for the National Merit Scholarship Program (which is what the "NMSQT" part of the name is for). It also serves as a practice test for the SAT, but be aware that you can't submit PSAT scores to colleges as your standardized test scores. What Sections Does the PSAT/NMSQT Include? The structure and content of the PSAT have been recently revised to reflect changes made to the SAT. There are three sections on the PSAT: Math, Reading, and Language and Writing. The total testing time of the PSAT is 2 hours and 45 minutes, and it includes 139 questions. This information is broken down more specificallybelow. Reading Section: 60 minutes to answer 47 questions Writing and Language Section: 35 minutes to answer 44 questions Math Section: 70 minutes to answer 48 questions What Material Do These Sections Cover? Reading Section The reading section tests students'ability to draw conclusions and make inferences from reading passages. The 47 questions arebased on three passages and two passage pairs (a passage pair is when a passage is paired with a chart, table, graph, or other passage, and the questions use information from both of those sources). The five passages/passage pairs will cover the following subjects: 1 on US/World Literature (with 9 corresponding questions) 2 on Social Studies/History (with 18-20 corresponding questions) 2 on Science (with 18-20 corresponding questions) Writing and Language Section The Writing and Language Section testsknowledge of grammar, usage, punctuation, and other English conventions. It does not include an essay. There are four passages/passage pairs in this section whichaddress topics related to careers, history/social studies, the humanities, and science. There are two categories of question in this section: 24 questions on Expression of Ideas 20 questions on Standard English Conventions Math Section The Math Section focuses on algebraic problems and tests ability to analyze and interpret data sets. For the first 25 minutes, a calculator is not allowed, but students are allowed to use a calculator for the last 45 minutes of the section. The questions are mostly multiple choice, but some (17-22%) will have grid-in answers. The topics tested in this section are: Heart of Algebra (linear equations and systems) Problem Solving and Data Analysis (quantitative literacy) Passport to Advanced Math (manipulation of complex equations) Additional Topics in Math (geometric and trigonometric skills) How Is the PSAT/NMSQT Scored? The PSAT has recently implemented a new scoring system. As of 2015, thescore range has been changed, and there will no longer be deductions for incorrect answers.Although the PSAT/NMSQT has a shared common score scale as the SAT, score ranges are not identical. The PSAT's total score range is 320-1520. The PSAT's range doesn'tgo up to 1600 like the SAT's does because the PSAT is a less difficult test than the SAT, and sincea perfect score on the PSAT does not necessarily indicate a perfect score on the SAT, having identical score ranges may have causedsome test takers to mistakenly believe that. There are two main section scores for the PSAT: the Math Score and the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Score. Both of these sections havescore ranges of 160-760. The Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Score is based on the combined scores of the Language and Writing and the Reading sections. This means that the Math section accounts for half of your entire PSAT score. The PSAT also has three test scores for each of the three subject sections, Math, Reading, and Language and Writing, that range from 8-38. Additionally, within each of these three sections there are several subsections with scores ranging from 1-15. These subscores letexam takers see how well they scored in more specific areas and can help make future studying more effective. There are seven subscores in the following categories: Reading:Command of Evidence, Words in Context Writing and Language:Expression of Ideas, Standard English Conventions Math:Heart of Algebra,Problem Solving and Data Analysis, Passport to Advanced Math What Are the Benefits of the PSAT/NMSQT? How can taking the PSAT help you? There are three main ways: 1. Practice for the SAT The PSAT allowsyou practice taking a test very similar to the SAT, under real test conditions. It can give you an estimate of the score you'd get on the SAT, and you can also look at the section scores and subscores to see which areas you should study the most in the future. The PSAT is a great way to practice for the SAT and other standardized tests 2. Practice for Standardized Tests in General Even though the PSAT will prepare you most directly for the SAT, taking it can benefit anyone looking to get more practice taking other standardized tests, like the ACT. It can help you practice managing your time during a test, improve your critical thinking skills, and also give you an opportunity to seehow well you do under official testing conditions. 3. Potential for Scholarship Money Competition is tough, but students with top PSAT scores can get a significant amount of scholarship money.Of the roughly 1.5 million high school juniors who take the test, about 50,000 students with the highest total PSAT/NMSQTscores qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. About 34,000 of those students become Commended Scholars. The roughly 16,000 students with the highest PSAT scores in the country (partly based on which state you live in) become National Merit Semi-Finalists, and most of them (about 15,000) move on to become National Merit Finalists. Over $180 million in scholarship money is awarded annually to students who get high scores on the PSAT. About half of the National Merit Finalistsreceive a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship, renewable for up to four years. Many corporations offer scholarship money as well. In addition, many colleges offer scholarships to National Merit Commended Scholars, Semi-Finalists, and Finalists. A favorite item of clothing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

A favorite item of clothing - Essay Example The large interior feels roomy and comfortable. The heaviness of the jacket on my shoulders reminds me I am wearing leather. Coolness meets my hands as I deposit treasures in my inner pockets. My outer pockets can feel light or heavy, depending on the items placed there. The whole jacket feels familiar, comfortable, and unique to me. As black as night without a moon, the leather is so dark it seems to reflect the light. The darkness is so black. The ebony color of my jacket reflects light, showing a white light bouncing off my jacket under direct artificial light. The only true way to appreciate the jacket’s true color is in natural light. Raven black covers the whole jacket, except for the zippers, buttons, and other sliver accessories. The silver twinkles in the sunlight. However, in artificial light the metallic twinkle is muted, depending on how close to the light I get. My leather jacket might look like any other leather jacket to the casual observer, but I would be able to pick my jacket out of a multitude of jackets. The arms are symmetrical like every other jacket, but the body is slightly longer than your average coat. Deep creases form in the arms of the jacket that match my arm bends and shape. The round buttons look like they came from button fly jeans. The round silver hoops hang off my jacket like earrings on a pretty girl. The pockets are creased from my cell phone, keys, and money placed there daily. My jacket is unique to myself, if not to others. The smell of my jacket is faintly leathery. Since it is an old jacket, the leather smell has faded over the years. If I use oil on the ancient leather, the smell becomes stronger. The strong leather smell is heady, but I prefer the faint leather smell. The faint leather smell reminds me of the warmth, security, and familiarity my jacket has provided me with over the years. Even after put up for the winter, the familiar smell beckons me

Do corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports provide shareholders Essay - 5

Do corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports provide shareholders and stakeholders with useful information on corporate soci - Essay Example the material costs relating to regulatory compliance. In the developed countries i.e. United States, Canada, and Australia among other countries, there has been a growing need for CSR reporting i.e. because of the stakeholders’ pressure and increased public awareness. Company’s shareholders, stakeholders and CSR reporting One of the key reasons why companies prepare the CSR reports is to offer useful information to the shareholders and stakeholders. This information translates into enhanced environmental and social conditions, because of the fact that stakeholders rewards the top performing corporations and punish the poorly performing corporate. Many investors and consumers are demanding environmental and social accountability amongst the companies, which has put pressure on them to execute CSR reporting. There has been a growing number of CSR reporting certifications i.e. ISO and SA8000 certifications, which reflects the growing need for reporting. They provide proof that CSR reporting offers valuable information to shareholders, and the companies’ stakeholders. Many companies view CSR reporting as an investment move as opposed to a cost. They conduct research relating to their stakeholders’ needs and report to them (Tschopp, 2012). ... Stakeholders including the customers, suppliers, employees, the government and other regulators all have an interest in the companies’ operations. The key goal of CSR reporting is to help the stakeholders understand how the companies affect their environmental, economic, and social circumstances (Merkl-Davies & Brennan, 2011). Another key reason why companies report on their social responsibility is to grow the shareholder’s wealth. Many companies include the CSR reporting in their annual financial reporting. This contributes towards building the shareholder wealth. For example, a company that reports about its social responsibility reflects its accountability to the public. These markets the company to the investors thus growing the demand for its stock. The high demand for the company’s stock translates into the growth in the shareholders’ wealth (KPMG, 2008). All companies feel that they are accountable to their stakeholders and, therefore, they recogni ze the responsibility by performing CRS reporting. The ethics branch of the stakeholder theory states that stakeholders have intrinsic rights, which the companies should not violate. According to the theory, even if the company does not benefit economically by getting involved in social responsibility activities, it should still participate and report for the benefit of all the stakeholders (Mahoney, 2013). Different stakeholders are interested in different types of information from the CSR reporting. For example, the consumers are concerned about the quality of the goods that the companies are offering in the market. They would like to know if the products would meet their needs and boost their health. Consumers would shun products that

Evolution of the Radio from 1920’s to 1940s Essay Example for Free

Evolution of the Radio from 1920’s to 1940s Essay As one of the most important means of communication, radio has undergone significant changes to better suit the needs of people from the basic up to the most sophisticated technology. It was during the 1920s when radio broadcasting has reached full scale. This development generated significant changes in the way people live their daily lives. The crystal radio of this period functioned without batteries but can only be heard with the aid of earphones. It then developed into radios electrically powered which come with loudspeakers resembling a trumpet. Detroit based WWJ radio station as well as Pittsburg’s KDKA became the pioneers of commercial broadcasts. The first regular broadcast license was issued by the federal government to Springfield’s WBZ radio station on the 15th day of September 1921. Other radio stations began to emerge around the country. It was on October 1922 when network broadcasting signaled its debut. In 1926, the NBC established the Radio Corporation of America, becoming the premier national network (Godfrey and Leigh 28). The generation of FM broadcast was discovered by Edwin H. Armstrong in 1933 (Godfrey and Leigh 30). Radio then became a versatile medium of communication. Military personnel, police, as well as airplane pilots made use of the tool for fast exchange of communication. In 1947, the transistor was developed at the Bell Telephone Laboratories. The year 1925 to the beginning of the 1950’s was considered to be the Golden Age of Broadcasting (Godfrey and Leigh 31). It was around this time when radio became a constant fixture in the American household. Work Cited Page Godfrey, Donald G. , and Frederic A. Leigh. Historical Dictionary of American Radio. A Dolls House by Henrik Ibsen Essay -- Dolls House Henrik Ibsen Essa

A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen â€Å"A dolls house† was written by Henrik Ibsen and produced by famous actors during the time of the 1800’s; in fact it was the year of 1879 to be precise. It was around this time that many different Social, cultural and historical moments were changing through time, leaving the end result to change not only one country but had an effect on most of the world. For this section of the work I will be carefully discussing with you the issues of; * Social events * Cultural events * Historical events Social Each of these events all had major issues around during the time; like the peoples views on marriage and the roles of men and women – with or without being married. Views and opinions were vitally important in those days, they had a massive effect on people’s lives, as meeting a widowed woman would have been horrific, simply because people saw marriage as such a major obstacle. Marriage was incredibly serious during them times and it was not accepted for people to split up from a marriage. They felt that when getting married they should only accept the other person if they were happy to live with them forever until death as the as the priest when getting married says: â€Å"Until death do us part† ======================== Each person when in a marriage had there own role; for the women they had to mainly work as housewives (although there were exceptions) and for the men they had to get a job and bring in the income for there relationship to live. It was just â€Å"the done thing† there were no reasons why a man could not stay at home and look after the house why the women worked it was just the way people presumed it to go. This is still pushing the boundaries of today... ...on. Divorce was unacceptable, as I have briefly mentioned before. The play itself is poignant as it set around the Christmas holiday, this is a time for giving, loving and sharing etcetera, where as Nora is doing the opposite. Also this is ironic as Nora’s father was a priest for the Christian religion. Nora believes in this miracle throughout the whole play, the fact that she is going to be free. Overall, all of these events played a massive role on Henrik Ibsen and influenced him incredibly leading to the naturalistic play of â€Å"A dolls house†. Without these cultural, historical and social issues taking place the play would not have turned out any thing like it did. Not only did the issues have a massive effect on the play but also the play had a massive effect on the issues. Taking each step a little closer with things like the right for women to vote.

Weddings Events and More E-Business Plan

Weddings, Events, & Beyond E-Business Plan Mary Weathersby Capella University May 15, 2011 I. Company Description Weddings Events & Beyond opened our doors in May of 2002 as a partnership. We have been continually expanding and now are a large firm with six full time planners, six assistants, four full time Accounting and Finance employees, two full time Human Resources employees, my partner, and myself. At this time we have a website that gives examples of our event planning capabilities with some pictures of events we have planned. We have decided to take the next step and implement a more advanced site where our customers can see the stages of their event as it is planned. It is our goal to allow the customer to log into our site at anytime and see what the plans for their event are and request changes if it is their wish. We would also like to implement a Secure Socket Layer so that our customers can pay their account on-line. Making our company more accessible through use of the Internet will help us to expand to the outlying areas that before now were more difficult to reach. The business model that Weddings Events & Beyond is striving to become with the Internet site is that of a â€Å"multi-channel merchant† or â€Å"bricks and clicks† merchant. This is the type of firm that has both a physical store, as the primary channel of income, and is introducing an online service. (Laudon & Traver 2010 p. 595) II. Marketing Plan Internet marketing is a little bit more complex than regular marketing in that we as a firm will have to show that we have the capability to develop a more positive and long term relationship with our customers. Laudon & Traver 2010 p. 362) We must develop a marketing plan which brings in all ranges on new customers from the bride and groom and their guests all the way to the business whose events we will be planning. We will be planning to show the consumer our unique qualities and capabilities such as the fact that every st ep of the planning of their event will be available for them to view on our site. This will require opening an account for each customer where they can log on to receive the most up to date work done on their event planning. This will also allow them to request changes until the closing date of their event. The following categories will be included in our marketing plan: A. Target Audience 1. Customer characteristics: We as a firm will be targeting the bride, the groom, and their families for the weddings and for the events we will be targeting the business community and upper to middle class families who normally do not have the time to plan and organize their special events. 2. Age demographic: Will be adults from the 20-50 year range. 3. Customer geographic: At this time we service only the state of Arizona. We travel all over the state as needed by where the event is being held. After implementation of e-business we will be targeting the states of California and Nevada as well. Ev entually with expansion we plan to cover major cities across the US. (Laudon & Traver 2010 p. 345 – p. 367) B. SWOT analysis (strengths weakness opportunities threats) 1. Strengths: One of the main strengths we possess is that we are one of only four companies in our area that plans Weddings and Events. We will be the first among the four that will be making a more immediate Internet presence.Making use of our services through the Internet will make us more accessible and give us a wider reach for customer than any other firm. We are the most established firm having been in the business making a name for ourselves for the longest period of time. Our planners have at least an associate’s degree in planning. They have been planners for a minimum of three years and have strong customer service skills. 2. Weakness: At this time we have no planners trained in e-business as will be take approximately four weeks to accomplish. We are right now in only the state of Arizona, but with the implementation of our e-business we plan to expand to cover California and Nevada. In order to do this we will need more planners and assistants. Hiring new people means we need to start training in all areas of our business including e-business models. This training will take time and resources to accomplish. We will also begin competing with other firms located in California and Nevada. These competitors will be listed in the competitive analysis portion of this plan. 3.Opportunities: We are convinced that the opportunity for the firm with the implementation of an e-business presence is great. Being the first firm to make ourselves more accessible to people on the go gives us a greater advantage over our competitors. The implementation of our e-business will allow us to reach outside of Arizona. This will eventually help in leading to country wide expansion. We will be able to advertise our business on affiliate sites such as Invitation sites, bridal dress sites, caterin g sites, and bridal registry sites. With the implementation of Internet marketing through ads, social networking, and search engine optimization we will be able to open up a market that was before now closed to us. 4. Threats: In becoming an e-business we will be implementing both a CRM plan and an ERP plan. We will now be competing with other Event Planners through Internet channels. Occasions, is just one of the other firms that we will be competing with. This firm is introducing a software program that helps the customer plan their own special event. We will need to convince these customers that using our firm will give them better results and free up their valuable time. We will be incurring larger travel expenses as well as payroll increase. If our e-business plan does not show a profit in the next 24-36 months we could lose both the e-business and our â€Å"bricks and mortar† store. We would have a harder time compensating for the losses. The price of implementing these n ew e-business models will be substantial and if our new Internet site does not bring in the expected increase in business it would be very hard to pay off these expenses. We will need to make sure that we are optimizing our Implementation of the Website through, search engine keywords and other Internet sites that would bring the consumer back to our site with as few clicks as possible. To decrease the threat of our competitors we will need to stay on our toes and keep our website updated as well as making sure that we are ready for anything. C. Competitive analysis: The leading competitors in our field are: TLC Wedding Consultants, which is at this time a two man operation which deals exclusively with weddings and holy communions. Occasions, this is a newly formed Event planner whose main ervice is a software program that helps the customer to plan their own events. Specialty Events, this is a three party team that organizes business events exclusively. This company plans seminars a nd company parties. They have not at this time branched out to work any other events. Competitors brought in to play by our expansion into an e-business will include new business in Nevada and California. Weddings by Nancy, is a firm out of Nevada who have been around approximately three years. They have a site that shows pictures of weddings they have planned and gives contact information for their store. At this time they are strictly a â€Å"bricks and mortar† firm. Their information website is ranked fourth in the search engine ranking. Events for Every Occasion is out of Nevada. They have three trained planners. Their website gives information about the types of events they plan as well as pictures and has reviews from previous customers. This site is currently ranked second in search engine results. Anywhere Anytime Events is a full service firm of three planners working in California. This firm has no website at this time. They do have newspaper and television ads and a client base of about six regular firms that they plan events for.California Event Planners is full service firm with a website that has customer reviews, photos, and contact information. They ask for permission to e-mail visitors to their site, they are at this time ranked number one in search engine results. This is the site we need to bump and take over in search engine results. Our firm, Weddings Events & Beyond, is the only full service planner in a 100 mile area. We are the largest firm and will be the first to become a major presence on the Internet offering to allow customers access to their planning results 24 hours a day. D.Marketing Strategy 1. Promotion: We will be promoting our firm through Social Networking on both Facebook. com and MySpace. com. It is our intention to put our name and services on the websites that reach the largest population possible through as many internet sites as possible. Social networks are one of the most used ways of communication with others . Facebook. com logged over 300 million members worldwide in September of 2009 and had 92 million unique visitors while MySpace. com logged 130 million members worldwide with over 64 million unique visitors. (Laudon & Traver 2010 p. 21) Promoting our name and services on these two social networks would help us reach a significantly larger audience that any of our competitors. We will also be using the services of Search Engine Optimization to help us use the right key words to make sure we are accessible to the customers looking for wedding and event planners. In order for the customer to find us using a search on the Internet we need to be able to be located by search engines. Through the use of Search Engine Optimization we will know the appropriate terms for use in order to be more easily found.Using this service will also help to ensure that we are linked to other sites that will put us closer to the top of search results. (SEOmoz) 2. Advertising: We will be adding a new form of advertising to help us with moving into the new e-business market. In addition to our usual advertising of yellow page and newspaper ads we will also begin Internet marketing. We will be using two forms of Internet marketing: â€Å"Viral Marketing† which is the â€Å"process of getting customers to pass along a company’s marketing message to friends, family, and colleagues, which is the online version of word of mouth. (Laudon & Traver 2010 p. 390) This type will help get our name out there faster than in the real world. The second form of Internet advertising we will be using is that of â€Å"direct e-mail marketing†. This type of marketing is highly effective. We will be sending e-mails to a group of Internet users who have shown interest in our services at one time or another. With this kind of advertising we would send out regular e-mails to people who have pulled up our website and asked to receive e-mails from us. The customer would then have to â€Å"o pt-out† to stop receiving the e-mails. (Laudon & Traver 2010 p. 43) This form of advertising is a mix of both on-line and off-line marketing since we will be using both the printed off-line version as well as having Internet advertising. 3. Public relations: Both through word of mouth and viral marketing we will be working on our public image helping to increase our public relations. As long as we stay true to our word and keep our customers happy this should not be a problem. III. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Customer relationship management (CRM) is the repository of customer information it will record and save all contacts a customer or prospective customer makes with our firm. This plan will also generate the customers profile from what they initially gave us upon entering our site through what categories they view concerning interest in types of events. There will also b e features that are possible for the event. (Laudon & Traver 2010 p356) This is how we will k now what our customer is interested in and give a general idea of their price limitations so that an initial plan can begin being implemented. The touch points that we will be using are: telephone network, Internet, mail & fax, staff contact, and our sales force. As part of our Internet touch point we will be asking visitors to our site for personal information and permission to e-mail them. We will be collecting data through sites that deal with all aspects of weddings and other events as well as sites that deal with bridal registry sites, incitation engraving sites, and visits to our facebook and MySpace sites. 1. Map of customers relationship with the firm. This will let us know how we got this customer as well as this customer’s preferences and if they refer any new customers. We will also be keeping a log of emails and phone conversations with customers throughout the planning of their event. . Product and usage summary. This will let us know which of our services each cu stomer is looking for and how often they return to us to help plan other events. 3. Profitability measures. This will let us know how well our Internet advertising is doing and if it is bringing in new customers. 4. Contact history. This will be summarizing the customers contact with the firm across delivery channels such as Internet and hard copy advertising. 5. E-mail company responses. This will help us to know how our email advertising is doing and how many people have come to our site and signed up for email from us.IV. Architecture plan Weddings Events & Beyond will require a multi-tier architecture plan. Since we already have a web page which lists our services and how to contact us we will need to build on this site to include, customer contact information, plans for events, security for customer payment of services, email integration which will allow customers to correspond with their planner, and a section that will allow employees to communicate with each other concerning finance, human resources, and management communication within the firm. This will require us to outsource to another company to produce the necessary hardware components. We will be implementing the following components: 1. An e-commerce website that will be hosted by NetSuite. com allowing us to scale our business with an application that ties the business together across E-commerce, Marketing, Supply Chain Management, Customer Relations Management, Financials, and Human Resources. This website will expanded to help track customer contact, customer event plans, customer e-mail capabilities, a Secure Socket Layer for customer payments, and employee communication capabilities. . New staff that will be in charge of maintaining this system as well as training staff on the new system. At this time we estimate that we will need two to three new employees that will do this. 3. New equipment and software to facilitate e-business. The new equipment will be computer systems that will be netw orked and implemented with the modules for our e-business expansion. The software will also be for working with all NetSuite models including ERP, CRM, and SCM, Competitive Vision, our competitive tracking firm, and BPIR our new benchmarking partners.V. Enterprise Resource Plan (ERP) The ERP plan that we will be implementing will make access to financial data and all aspects of the Human Resources Department easier for our staff. This will allow the staff to run credit information on prospective clients as well as work up account information so our finance department can accurately prepare invoices, spreadsheets, and all other accounting data. This will also allow planners to input their own expense reports for quicker calculations. The Human Resources applications of the new system will make it easier for staff to check their time sheets, medical coverage, 401k, vacation and sick day’s status, and commission status. This should cut down on the amount of time needed by that de partment to do this for each staff member. The implementation of these two systems will also make it easier for management to review all of this data without the need of printing multiple reports freeing up the time needed for this from all departments. VI. Supply Chain Management (SCM) The scope of our SCM needs at this time is limited to information and inancials. We will be working with NetSuite in this area as well, to maintain integrity with our other systems. We are a service organization that helps our customers decide and plan the aspects of their special event. We work closely with caterers, floral designers, Churches and reception halls. We do not make deposits or pay for any of these things. However, we do keep tabs on what stage of planning these services are at, in order to keep the customer up to date but at the same time not bogged down by all these companies calling them. (Laudon & Traver 2010 p. 77 1. Information chain: We will need to maintain customer information so that we can keep up to date information on our site for each customer. The information we will need concerning the customer is: A. Name B. Billing address C. Telephone number D. E-mail address E. Vender Preferences (so we know who we will be working with) 2. Vender information chain: We will also need to maintain information on all the vendors that we work with as well as full descriptions of what each vendor offers. The information we need from each vendor is: A.Name B. Address C. E-mail or website D. Telephone number We need to have this vendor information so that the customer knows what each one offers and can save the time it takes to call around looking for the right vendor. This will help to narrow the choices thus making it easier on the customer. The knowledge of what each vendor offers is crucial in helping to save time for our customers. We would also like to add links for the different vendors to our site so that the customer can shop around from our site in as few cli cks as possible. In return the venders would also have a link to our site posted on theirs. 3. Financial flow: For this area we will need to make it possible to maintain the customer’s credit card number and verification code. This will also make it possible to help our customer even further by allowing us to keep records of what the customer wants from each vendor and verify payments have been made. VII. Competitive Tracking (Knowledge Management) We have found that there is a need to implement a program for competitive tracking in order to better understand our business environment. The information that will be gained from a competitive tracking system will help us in making key business decisions for the entire firm. In order for us to remain competitive with other planning firms we need to understand what they are doing, (Competitive Vision 2011) We have decided that it would serve our interests best at this time to get a software program through Competitive Vision. This pr ogram is a web based competitive intelligence solution offering as easy way to collect, organize, and evaluate competitive information. Some of the benefits of implementing this software would be: * Better understanding of our competitive landscape * Enhancing our strategic planning process * Facilitating more effective information sharing among our shareholders * Lowering costs related to the competitive intelligence effort. Through this software we will be able to view competitive information in an SWOT business model. We will be able to create industry and competitor profiles. The competitive tracking information will be consolidated for easier understanding and be managed in real time. The cost of this software program will be $ 500. 0 per month for the first five users. As we continue to expand into other cities across the United States we will be able to expand our user base at which time our monthly fee would go up to compensate for those additions. Implementing this competiti ve Intelligence software will take the guesswork out of finding out what our competitors are doing. VIII> Benchmarking. Benchmarking will be in partnership with BPIR (Business Performance Improvement Resource) which is a firm that helps in the process of finding how to improve our company’s performance standards and researches the performance standards of our competition. We want to keep a customer service rating of 100% satisfaction and a performance rating of 95% and higher. This is our current level as we make the plans for implementing our e-business. The changes that are going to be happening over the next 8-12 months should no cost us the satisfaction of our customers. Through BPIR we will be conducting a quarterly review in the following areas: 1. Best Practices which are the practices that are known to produce the highest results. 2. Performance Measures which is a periodic review to see whether our staff is performing at their peak. 3.Self Assessment which is an asses sment each employee takes showing how well they think they are doing 4. Competitor Analysis which is a system that helps to show how our competitors are doing and what level their benchmarking is at. 5. Website reviews which is how we will determine how effective our website is and where we rank in search results. This will help us to make sure that we are able to continue being the first choice of our prospective customers. IX. Conclusion. As you can see there are quite a few things that will be changing once we break into the world of e-business.We are looking forward to the time when this implementation and training process are completed. As it is we have a long hard road ahead of us. But, taking our â€Å"bricks and mortar† firm to a â€Å"bricks and clicks† firm will be step in the direction of progress which every firm must go through eventually. This is a large step but one we must take if we are to stay ahead of our competitors. This type of business model fall under the description of an e-tailer, meaning we have a regular firm with an Internet website that handles the Internet side of our business. Our website will be based on a sales revenue model. (Laudon &Traver 2010 p. 8 & 70) The implementation plan we have outlined will have an economic impact on the business because the initial cost of implementing the ERP, SCM, and CRM will be expensive. We estimate total cost of core services to be in the price range of $ 100,000 dollars. This includes the website development and hosting. The cost of competitive tracking and benchmarking will be separate as well as the man hours that it will take our people to become trained. The cost of competitive tracking will be $500 dollars per month through Competitive Vision. The benchmarking will be approximately $500 dollars through BPIR ever quarter. The risks we take in this are that we would be putting all this money out to become an e-business and there are never any guarantees that we will be succe ssful. By implementing our e-business we will be mortgaging our current business model but, this would be the case with any kind of expansion process. The benefits of this plan are that we would be able to reach a larger customer base and begin servicing California and Nevada before moving into those areas full scale with a new store and new employees. Future forces that would affect us would be if any of our competitors also implement this same idea.We are looking at this happening in the next five years but we plan to be well ahead of the game by that time. This plan at the onset will mean more work for our management staff but once it is fully implemented and our people are fully trained they will be able to do twice as much work in half the time. This will free up more time to give our staff the necessary evaluations to verify they are doing their jobs right. As you have seen every member of the firm will need to be trained in the new systems and we will need to hire new employe es who have the necessary e-business knowledge to help us succeed. The final thing we need to include here are the timelines for implementation and training. The implementation is estimated to take between six and eight months. Executive training will begin around two months before completion and be accomplished in three hour increments, three times a week for four weeks. This is so that we will be ready when full implementation is accomplished. Staff training will begin one month prior to completion and will be done in three hour increments twice a week for four weeks ending on or around the completion date.X. References Laudon, K.
